Here’s a couple of drawings I did this pastweek of the late great Ron Smith, the “voice of reason” from WBAL Radio. He passedaway a few days before Christmas, he as 70 years old. I have another drawing on theboards now, not real pleased with these 2, the 3^rd will be donesoon.

Ron was a great talk show host. He was wellinformed, honest and direct to his listeners. We were lucky to have him here inBaltimore as long as we did. He will be missed by many.

This a photo of my sister in law Barbara Carll. She passed away 11 months ago, she had cancer. Today would have been her 55^thbirthday. We miss her a lot. She was the “Martha Stewart” of the family. She was a great cook, knew howto entertain and was fun to be around! In this photo she’s holding a caricature I did of her 5 years ago for her 50^thbirthday. I drew her on the cover of her own magazine.

Worked this weekend at Baltimore's first Grand Prix Racing Event. Not knowing how things would turn out, it ended up being a pretty good weekend. Great crowds for the 3 day event, plus great weather. We definitely lucked out with the weather, considering all the rain we have being getting lately. Below are some photos of the event.

Working a party at the Vice President’s Mansion, Big @#%&* Deal!!

Not too often you get a gig at the Vice President of United States' home, Joe Biden. But this weekend I did. It was in the heart of Washington, DC. It was a summer "beach party" for his staff members and their families. To get in there, the security was heavy, as expected.

As always, the caricatures were popular and I was busy, busy. I did however get a chance to meet the VP, he signed the caricature and was able to get a couple of photos with him. He was very friendly, his wife was too. And he even thought the caricature was pretty FUNNY.

How bout them O's??!! The Baltimore Orioles season opener could not have been any nicer. The weather was perfect, sold out crowd with a sea of orange (like the old days) and their 4th straight win.

The Baltimore Orioles yesterday announced that they have signed a multi-year deal with WBAL Radio 1090 to be the club's radio flagship station. They were at another station for the past 3 years, so they are back! Congratulations to my friends at WBAL. I wish them both the Orioles and WBAL a GREAT season. Go O's!!

Actor Tony Curtis died today. He was a fine actor that was nominated for an Oscar back in 1958. His career started back in the early 50's, he had a good run. He was also a pretty good painter in his later years. RIP Tony.

This guy builds solar energy plants around the world. Having him standing on top of the world with the happy sun beaming on him, I thought it was a quick and easy way to capture him and his occupation without getting to detailed.

Here's a happy face who just received a caricature as a gift. I was commisioned to do a group of guys tailgating (see last post) and they gave to the main tailgater , before last Sunday's game. He was tickled!

Then afterwards, we went in to watch the Ravens beat DiBears 31-7 and we had GREAT seats too, right in front row. Go Ravens!!

Here's a group of guys (couple of friends of mind) that tailgate at all the Raven games that commisioned me to do. I finally got a caicature of my good friend Groovy Red on my blog (The one with the bald head, Pete.) It was fun to do and they got as big kick out of it.

ISCA Convention

Went to the ISCA Convention (International Society of Caricature Artists) last week in Ohio. I didn't win the Golden Nosey (the top award), but I drew the Golden Nosey Winner, Glenn Ferguson with his new do. Congratulations Glenn, well deserved!

I also drew Mr. Nosey himself, Tad Barney (well sort of) and the lovely Kathy McMillan from Canada.

Above is a caricature of a couple getting married this weekend. She wanted to be the Queen of Hearts and him the Mad Hatter for their signing board.

This a project for a hospital that is located close to an Air Force base and wanted to appeal to young families on their base. They pretty much had the idea, I just drew it up for them. They'll be using it for all the advertising, posters, ads, etc...

End of the baseball season

Sorry for the long drought folks. I got lots of e-mails asking, where I've been?? Just not much time to post. Need to get better.

Well, the Baltimore Orioles finished off their season this past Sunday. It ended just as bad as the last 12 years with a losing record, sole possession of last place and another late season collapse. They do have some promising young talent for next year, but we'll see... Stay tuned.

Anyway, the last game of the season I did a caricature of 2 of the sports guys in town that do their radio show at the ballpark, Tom Davis and former O's pitcher Dave Johnson. They are both great at what they do. I gave each one of them one of the caricatures and they signed one for me. They were both pleased.

This is a caricature I did of Cal Ripken a couple of years ago. I was not pleased with it so I re-worked it.

She's now a freshman in high school and it was just yesterday, that she just found out that she made the school's VARSITY lacrosse team. Stairway to the Attic

Here's a drawing I did MANY moons ago when I was a young lad in high school. I was going through the attic and found it a couple of days ago. It's pretty bruised and ripped up as you can see. After looking at it, it's hard to believe I had the patience to draw all those rocks back then.

I wanted to try and fix it up alittle to preserve it some. Back then I guess I didn't feel like filling in the whole background so I trimmed it out, leaving a hallow around it?? So now I decided to finish off the background. This what I did:

And this is how it turned out. It's over 4 ft high and I found a frame for it too.

Retirement Gift Caricature

Here's a retirement caricature for an architect guy who designs steel structures. I just finished the other day. It was sort of a rush job, not to mention I had a poor photo to work from. The client was very pleased with it that he has me doing another rush job with 5 heads on it with the owners of the company for their xmas gift.

I've been quite busy doing my usual holiday cards this year. Here some that I did this year already. These were all done digitally.

Here's a local minor league baseball team the Aberdeen Ironbirds owned by Cal Ripken. I've be doing their card for the past several years. They wanted to stay with the snowman theme.

Here's a local regional TV network MASN that boardcast the Orioles and Washington Nationals that wanted a snowman theme also.

This is a local radio station that wanted to have Santa "texting" with a message inside to see what kind of response they get.

This company I've done for the past 4 years. This time they wanted to do the "Oz" theme?? (Wrong holiday, but it still worked.)

This a small investment company trying to figure out how the market is going to go and put it on the right track. They didn't want too much of a "holiday look".

Here's my version of our new president-elect, Barack Obama. I actually did this last week before the election. I meant to post it on election day, but was out of town at a caricature convention in NC. (Wow, what great stuff there!!)

But anyway, this my second attempt to paint digitally in photoshop. I'm pleased in how it turned out. It took longer that I wanted, but was a learning curve for sure. Hope you like it!

Here's one I just finished the other day. It was a quick turn around. I did it in marker and chalk. I was going to do it digitally, but I needed to get it shipped out and done quickly, no room for error. It worked out pretty good.

Unusual ballpark drawing

You don't get this kind of drawing or request everyday. A couple came by like any other young couple and asked to get their caricature done. I said, "sure". The guy came up to me and whispered, "have me proposing to her". I said "ok". I drew him first then she sat down. I decided to have him on one knee, holding a ring and her on a pedestal. He watched as I finished up and I turned it around to show her and she was shocked (happy) to say the least.

Then he stepped right in front of her, got down on one knee, popped out a ring and proposed, right there!! She jumped up and gave him a big hug and would not let go. Pretty cool!! That doesn't happen too often at the park.

Here's a caricature I did of a good friend of mine who I went to grade school and high school with for his 50th surprise birthay party. (He's a lot older than me, I'm not sure how that happen??) But anyway, he works multiple jobs and wears alot of hats. So that's what I did in the drawing.

Below is a drawing from a young budding artist who was at the party, who is Mark's niece, her name is Mary and she is only 9 years old. She did a drawing of her father in just a few minutes, WOW. She loves to draw, she draws all the time and it shows. Keep up the good work Mary!

Hi all. I've been quite busy lately. Getting into spring and baseball season, which gets pretty crazy at times. Attached are some photos of my stand at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore. It's a great place to work and I have a good location at the park, which is crucial. I’ve been there since the park open in 1992. But it's a GREAT place to watch a ball game. This time of year in April can be slow at times...

Anyway, been quite busy. Below is my first digital painting. I did it last month for my other daughter’s birthday present, she like this young guitar player. I was pretty happy with it. Inspired by all the great stuff a lot of my colleagues are doing. But I have a long way to go. I’ll be posting more often. Again sorry to all of you who have been waiting so long.

Here's one of my caricatures I did “live” last night at a local Restaurant (Luna Del Sea), that I’ve been doing some work for lately. This one is of our former governor here in Maryland, Robert Ehrlich. It was a pleasure to meet him and to draw him!! I don’t get too many opportunities to draw “famous” people live. Off of photos, yes. I’ve been to quite a few events where there have been VIPs, some local politicians and famous sports personalities. But they WILL not stand in line to get a drawing done let alone sit for 5 minutes. They’re too busy and if they do sit, the crowd would be all over them which is good for business, but I don't get an opportunity to talk with them; it gets too chaotic.

But drawing Governor Ehrlich was very cool. He came to the restaurant early before the crowd showed up. So I was able to chat with him while drawing. It was funny because the restaurant called me that day and asked me to come in earlier to draw the governor. I said, ok. Then I started looking up photos of him, trying to get a feel for his face before I drew it that night. Looking up his bio, checking out some local stories in the paper to talk to him about. Thinking up some Irish stories... While waiting for him to show up, I find out that Governor Martin O”Malley is not the one I am going to draw, it's the former Governor, Bob Ehrlich. So I had to rethink what I was going to draw and say. The drawing is now hanging right above the table he always sits at when he comes there a couple times a week.

The next time I’m in the restaurant Iwill get a couple of photos of all the caricatures on the wall and I'll post them.

Here's a "greeting card" I did for an current client of mine that works at a mortgage company. She wanted some personalized cards made to give out to her clients. I ended up doing quite a few drafts, then tweaking the final a few times. The balloons started out much smaller. This is a birthday one and below that is the “thank you” card. There maybe others to follow.

A Gift Caricature

Here's a gift caricature I did of my neighbor that was used as a signing board. He just turned 40 and his wife Maureen threw a nice party for him. He's originally from Ireland and has been over here in the US for about 15 years. I wanted tie in the two some how, not to mention he loves beer.
I first worked from a quick sketch I did of him this past year. Working in photoshop and knowing how to get around in it helps a great deal, you can add more options as you go. Placing the US flag in the back ground faded a little was pretty cool and that's what I wanted. But after looking at it awhile, the flag stood out too much so I took it out and put it on his tie and I think that worked better. Plus I thinned out his neck too (which I don't think he minded.)

It's that time of year. Here are just a couple of xmas cards I've been working on this year. I have been doing these 2 for the past couple of years, each year with a different theme. This is the first year however that I've done the color digitally. It is soooo much easier to make changes, add and subtract things.
